Africa Remix

Rebooted

This virtual exhibition a reimagining of Simon Njami's iconic "Africa Remix". The original exhibition was a monumental feat, featuring over 120 artworks from nearly 80 distinct artists spanning the vast African continent.

Exploring the Dimensions of African Art

This exhibition comprises three distinct yet interconnected realms: Perceived Space, Conceived Space, and Experienced Space. These sections form the core of our online exhibition, each offering a unique lens through which to view and interpret art.

Space

Space is not just something you can touch or see. It's a living, changing concept that has many different aspects. When we talk about Africa, we should think of it not only as a landmass but as a rich tapestry of many different areas, each with its own story and identity. These areas are always changing, shaped by the diverse cultures and histories they harbor.

Perceived Space

Art is an immediate sensory experience, a world where colors, forms, and textures converge to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts. It's the raw, unfiltered encounter with art as seen through the eyes, the first layer of connection between the viewer and the artwork.

Conceived Space

Venture into the realm of ideas and concepts. This space transcends the tangible aspects of art, inviting you to explore the artist's intent, the underlying themes, and the societal or personal narratives that shape each piece. It's a journey into the mind of the creator, where meaning is constructed and deconstructed.

Experienced Space

Experience the living essence of art. Here, the focus shifts to the interaction between the artwork and its audience, the personal and collective experiences that art ignites. This space is about the dialogue – sometimes silent, often profound – between you and the artwork, and the lasting impressions it leaves.
Through these three perspectives, our exhibition aims to offer a comprehensive exploration of art, challenging you to see beyond the canvas and connect with the deeper essence of creativity. Join us as we navigate these spaces, where perception, conception, and experience intertwine to redefine the boundaries of art.

Interplay

The three types of spaces are continuously in dialogue. For instance, the daily routines and pathways of spatial practice (perceived space) can influence or be influenced by the abstract designs of representations of space (conceived space).

Contradictions & Conflicts

Often, there's a tension between how space is designed (conceived space) and how it's actually lived (lived space). For instance, a public square might be designed as a transit space, but the local community might use it for gatherings, protests, or festivals.

Co-production

Spaces are co-produced by their conceptual designs and everyday uses. While urban planners might design a city layout, it's the daily routines, movements, and activities of its inhabitants that truly shape and define that space.
